Attic Insulation

Why does attic insulation help your entire home?

Invest In Attic Insulation To Protect Your Family From The Top Down.

The attic is probably the least interesting part of the house. It is a cold, gray area that is usually used up for extra storage. However, this uninteresting part of your house actually dictates how cold and warm your house will be during winter and summer. Attics without proper insulation not only increases your energy consumption, but it also increases the risk of property damage due to mold, pests, etc.

Installing attic insulation to your home is a great long-term investment as it keeps your home at a comfortable temperature without spending extra money on heat and cooling systems. We, your trusted local consultants at Thermal Guard Services, can help you build a better energy-saving home that will save both your pockets and your house structure for a long period of time.

What Attic Insulation Should I Invest in for my Home?

There really isn’t a “one size fits all” answer to this question. You see, the different types of attic insulation works best depending on your house’s current status and needs, and where you’re currently living in.

The common attic insulations are: fiberglass batts, cellulose, loose-fill fiberglass, spray foam. Each of these types vary in R-value which is a term given to thermal resistance to heat flow. Though “the higher the better” the R-value is “great”, getting insulations with the highest R-value really isn’t the best for your homes. Each insulation has its own strengths and weaknesses that are listed below:

  • Fiberglass Batts are the cheapest and easiest attic insulation to find. It has an R-value of 2.2 – 2.7.  If you’re on a tight budget or you’re not planning to stay at a place for too long and want to invest on a short-term material, then this might be what’s best for you.
  • Cellulose is an eco-friendly insulation that is made from recycled wood or paper. It has an R-value of 3.2 – 3.5 . While cellulose doesn’t really act as an air barrier, it’s dense enough to control air movement and prevent your attic from turning into a frost cave during winter. Because  its cellulose fibers are tightly-packed and treated, it’s fire-resistant and inedible for insects.
  • Loose-fill fiberglass consists of small particles of  fiber, cellulose, or foam. It is blown into  attics or finished wall cavities to fill in necessary spaces. It has an R-value of approximately 2.5 per inch. Just like cellulose, this needs a big machine to blow the insulation materials in.
  • Spray Foam is formed using a combination of two liquid chemicals, which then expands 30-60 times its size to form a foam. With an R-value of 3.5 – 6.5 and based on its performance, this is the best insulation out in the market. Even though it’s more expensive than other insulations, this is a great investment that will give you long-term results. Click here to know more about spray foam and its benefits.
